In order to slide the base to pick up the ball you just have to slide your finger towards the left or the right as fast as you can. Try to get to the bouncing point before the ball falls down and you have to start all over again. Make sure you know which colors need more strikes because sometimes the ball will go from one block to the other without falling down.
